Chapter 01

A musician who kept taking loudspeakers apart

Kerr Acoustic began the way a lot of good engineering begins - as an obsession that got out of hand. Jes Kerr came to loudspeakers from the other side of the glass, as a session and touring musician and a producer, someone who spends his working life listening to what a monitor is and is not telling him. Alongside that he collected, restored and modified a great many loudspeakers, which is the fastest education available in what actually matters and what is merely claimed.

That combination is unusual and it shows in the products. Critical listening on its own produces speakers that flatter; engineering on its own produces speakers that measure well and bore you. Kerr's designs come from someone who had to trust a monitor professionally before he ever had to sell one.

Chapter 02

Quarter-wave, Baltic birch, ribbon

Every Kerr loudspeaker rests on three decisions, and the company has not wavered on any of them.

The first is the transmission line. Built on quarter-wave principles and refined in detail, it gives bass extension and control out of all proportion to the cabinet's size - which is why a Kerr standmount routinely embarrasses floorstanders in the room. The second is the cabinet itself, made from high-grade, responsibly-sourced Baltic birch plywood. Its ninety-degree alternating cross-grain makes a panel that damps itself, so the box adds nothing and passes almost nothing into the floor. MDF is cheaper and it is not close. The third is the true ribbon tweeter, with a diaphragm measured in hundredths of a gram, which resolves detail at a speed a dome cannot reach and does it without the fatigue that usually comes with that much information.

Behind all three sit the crossovers: hand-wound air-core inductors, pair-matched film capacitors and resistors, each network assembled by hand and measured individually before it goes in.

Chapter 03

Hand-crafted in Cambridge

Kerr builds in Cambridge, England, and the word hand-crafted is meant literally. Cabinets are cut and assembled by hand, then hand-finished and lacquered by specialists, in real wood veneers or in automotive-grade polyester lacquer matched to any of more than two hundred RAL colours, satin or high gloss. Every pair is checked before it leaves.

The reviews have followed the method. The K320 took first place in a HiFi Choice floorstander group test and collected an Editor's Choice on the way; the K300 earned ninety-six percent in Norway, five stars from What Hi-Fi?, and Product of the Year from Stereo+. For a company of this size, that is a remarkable strike rate - and it comes from a range of just five models. Kerr does not launch speakers to fill a price gap.

Chapter 04

2025 - the newest name in the house

Joenit took on Kerr Acoustic for the Benelux in 2025. It is the most recent addition to a house whose other partnerships are measured in decades, and it was an easy decision for an awkward reason: these are expensive loudspeakers from a small maker almost nobody in the Benelux had heard of, and the only way to sell them is to let people hear them. That happens to be exactly what Joenit is for.

If you are reading this page because you saw a price and wanted to know who these people are, the honest answer is: a very small British company that will not compromise on the three things that make a loudspeaker work, and charges what that costs.
